Tour Plan
Your group day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech begins around 8:00 AM with a scenic drive through the fertile Haouz plains. As we approach the charming village of Chichaoua – a perfect halfway stop for a refreshing coffee break – take a moment to soak in the views. The journey continues, and as you near Essaouira, keep an eye out for the iconic sight of goats playfully climbing the Argan trees! This presents an excellent opportunity to capture memorable photos before arriving in Essaouira.
During your visit, we’ll stop at a local Argan oil cooperative where you’ll witness firsthand how this precious “liquid gold” or Moroccan oil is extracted and transformed into fine cosmetic products. You’ll learn about the traditional methods used for centuries to harness its rich benefits.
Upon arrival in Essaouira, you’ll have plenty of free time to explore this captivating city at your own pace. From our experience, exploring Essaouira independently is a joy – the locals are incredibly friendly and welcoming, eager to share their culture with visitors. The Medina is relatively compact compared to other Moroccan cities, making it easy to navigate, and its streets are well-organized. While a guided tour isn’t essential, your driver can assist you in arranging a local guide if you desire deeper insights into the city’s history and hidden gems.
Begin your exploration by visiting the bustling harbor with its iconic fishing port and historic Portuguese fortifications. Admire the medieval cannons strategically positioned overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean. Next, venture into the UNESCO-listed Medina, the old city, to witness its remarkably well-preserved 18th-century fortifications. A major landmark is La Scala, a fortress built to defend against naval attacks. Continue to Bab Laalouj, one of Essaouira’s main gates, and explore Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter. The beauty and historical significance of the Medina are sure to leave you in awe, with its diverse array of art shops, galleries, souvenir stores, and Thuya woodcraft workshops.
Indulge in a delicious seafood lunch at one of the many local cafes offering terraces with panoramic views. Afterward, head to the Kasbah, historically significant as a military bastion. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a stroll along Mogador’s expansive sandy shores and watch locals enjoying beach volleyball – don’t be surprised if you’re invited to join in! Alternatively, relax and sunbathe while observing amateur kitesurfers and windsurfers harnessing the coastal breeze.
In the late afternoon, between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, we’ll begin our comfortable drive back to Marrakech, concluding your full-day tour to Essaouira with a convenient drop-off at your hotel or the nearest car-accessible point to your riad.
